That is also your job. We need crisis response skills both individually and collectively - wherever the Naval Reserve "high tech brain trust" is needed. Our role is readiness for mobilization as fully functioning Engineering Duty Officers. Some of that role must always be undefined because we are dealing with an uncertain future and with technology that is changing at an accelerated pace so, you need to be ready for real contingency with a well-prepared mind able to think its way to engineering solutions.
I want to increase our interoperability by enhancing our network of connection -not just as electronic connectivity but in human cooperation as well. I plan to attend many of our larger meetings around the country. Since I have a complex schedule, it is important for each Technical Training Advisor (TTA) at the sixteen Readiness Commands to coordinate meetings where it would be appropriate for me to attend - by contacting CAPT William Kastner, 703/602-1625, before plans are complete. Electronic connectivity and computer applications are becoming more important, too. I have been using the electronic mail capabilities of InterNet to communicate with some of you. Now I would like to have a broader dialog. Please send me your InterNet address - if you have one - as an InterNet message. We intend to build a virtual network, EDnet. My address on InterNet is:
grq@cu.nih.gov
Please include your full address in your message. Some InterNet routings are so complex that the sending address is hard to decipher. It would also be useful if you included a list of the computer-oriented skills that you have languages, technology, and computer size range. We have some interesting computer challenges to meet.
I am anticipating some very busy and productive years as the Senior Naval Reserve Engineering Duty Officer. I have been entrusted with the stewardship of 6,500 Reservists in 200 units - including 1,000 EDs. At the highest level of abstraction, our most important task is to translate the findings of science into useful tools of war for the United States Navy. I want everyone to know that we do that superbly.
