RADM Gilbertson

Roger Gilbertson is a retired two-star Rear Admiral. From 1991 to 1998 he was responsible for 200 Naval Reserve units with 5,000 reservists. Included were 1,000 Engineering Duty Officers - the High Tech Brain Trust of the Department of Defense.

His Navy duty has been highlighted by connoisseur performance of leadership - empowering, motivating, innovating - and persuading.

He is a plank-owner in the 1960s Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS) - the ancestral computer system that empowers state-of-the-art Aegis warships - the Ticonderoga Class Cruisers and the Arleigh Burke Class Destroyers.

CIVILIAN CAREER

In his civilian career, Dr. Gilbertson has mentored and sponsored basic research in the International Trade Administration. He retired from that second calling in 2001. He also served on the adjunct faculty of Shenandoah University from 1990 to 1995 where he taught in the MBA program.

NAVY LEADERSHIP

Rear Admiral Gilbertson had three Commanding Officer tours as he advanced to Admiral. He has served on a dozen Officer Promotion Boards - responsible for the careers of hundreds of officers.

He has been Chairman of the Reserve Engineering Duty Executive Steering Committee (RESC), the Naval Reserve Engineering Duty Qualification Board (NREDQB), and the ED Reserve Policy Steering Group (RPSG). He has also been the Chairman for many technical conferences and meetings.

As an Admiral his billet was Deputy Director for Mobilization of the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, DC - NAVSEA employes over 60,000 people.

As a Captain he was Director of the Naval Reserve Engineering Duty Officer Course at Leesburg, Virginia, for three years.

EDUCATION

Rear Admiral Gilbertson has had a long association with many forms and themes of education - he graduated from an engineering high school, the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute "A" course.
  • His undergraduate Engineering degree is from Georgia Tech, 1958
  • He has a Master of Science from Purdue University, 1959
  • Plus the Program for Managment Development from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, 1972
  • And the University of Southern California (USC), 1986 (Masters) and 1988 (Doctorate) - dissertation, The Search for Wisdom Systems.
  • Also the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF), 1990
MORE EDUCATION

He attended the National Defense University as the first Naval Reserve Capstone Fellow (1993). He has also done graduate work at the University of Colorado, the American University, the George Washington University Law School, the USDA Graduate School, and UCLA. Other military education includes the Senior Reserve course at the Army War College, the Senior Seminar at the Navy War College, and the Senior Acquisition Management Course at the Defense Systems Management College. He completed a wide variety of Naval Correspondence Courses during his career. He also attended, by invitation, the Russian General and Admirals Course at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
