RADM(Sel) Roger G. Gilbertson, USNR, was selected on 11 November 1991 by the Fiscal Year 1993 Naval Reserve Rear Admiral Selection Board to be the new Naval Reserve Engineering Duty Officer (NRED) Flag Officer. He will relieve RADM Brian T. Sheehan, USNR, who will retire on 1 July 1992 - in San Francisco.
RADM Gilbertson is the READINESS COMMAND REGION SIX Technical Training Advisor (TTA). In civilian life Dr. Gilbertson is a Program Manager for Basic Research, at the U.S. Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration. He is also on the adjunct faculty of Shenandoah University where he teaches in the MBA program.
He is a graduate of Georgia Tech where he obtained his Bachelor of Engineering degree - 1958. He holds a Master of Science degree from Purdue University - 1959 - as well as a Masters - 1986 - and a Doctorate - 1988 - from the University of Southern California. He was commissioned as an Engineering Duty Officer in 1961 from Officers Candidate School (OCS), Newport, RI. He was awarded the City of Newport Presentation Sword as the first in his class of 300.
He has been three times a Commanding Officer and twice an Executive Officer of Naval Reserve units.
He was the Director of the NRED Course, Leesburg, VA, for the seven classes prior to relocating the course to Mare Island, CA. He has directed the first two NRED Commanders Technical Leadership Courses at Leesburg, VA, and will direct the 1992 course in June. He has also served on the Naval Reserve Engineering Duty Qualification Board (NREDQB) and the NRED Reserve Policy Steering Group (RPSG).
He is the Deputy National Recruiting District Assistance Council (RDAC) Coordinator and the Chairman of the RDAC, Naval Recruiting District, Washington, DC. He is a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) (Membership Committee); Navy League (Director, Northern VA and 4 times Chairman of the Annual Navy League Reserve Night); Naval Order; Military Order of the Carabao; Naval Reserve Association; Reserve Officers Association; Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers;Institute of Industrial Engineers; American Society of Public Administration;Fleet Reserve Association; and the Naval Enlisted Reserve Association.
His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Recruiting Service Ribbon and the Recruiting Wreath (27 times).
